Marked annually on March 8th, International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women coupled with a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

Over the course of the week as part of the #IWD2021 #ChooseToChallenge campaign, we are publishing a series of spotlight videos and interviews which explore the candid views and experiences of members of our team, looking at the factors they feel contribute to gender bias, and to urge all women, and men, to challenge inequality, call out bias, question stereotypes, and help forge an inclusive world.

Spotlight #4 is with Natasha Pizzarello, an associate lawyer in Hassans' Corporate & Commercial team.  Many thanks to Natasha for your contribution to IWD2021.

1. Is gender equality a women’s issue or a human issue?

I believe the issue of gender equality is a human issue that should concern everyone. It is an issue that has historically prejudiced women but has the potential of affecting everyone directly and indirectly. The lack of women’s voice and perspective is a loss for society.

1. Do you think that stereotyping of women contributes to the lack of women in leadership roles?

Stereotyping of women and their roles has existed for generations. Limiting women to a set of stereotypical traits can influence their decision to aim for a leadership role and also prejudice the perception of women.

1. What can we do today to help the women of future generations succeed? 

By educating the younger generation on gender equality we can change their mindsets early on and break the cycle of gender stereotypes of women. Each generation has an influence on the next.

1. What is your vision for 2030 in terms of equality of the genders?

My vision for 2030 is that issue of gender equality is one of the past and that we are able to look back and be proud on the progress made by our generation.

1. What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?

I would tell my 18-year-old self to not let other people’s opinions and expectations limit what I can achieve. Self-confidence, hard work and perseverance are important to achieve the goals you set yourself and gender should not influence your success one way or another.
